Campbell Macknight is a retired academic, living in Canberra, Australia. He was formerly Professor of Humanities in the University of Tasmania and is currently a Visiting Fellow in the Research School of Asian and Pacific Studies, College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, Canberra. He is also President of the Association for the Publication of Indonesian and Malaysian Studies Inc. The association publishes the Review of Indonesian and Malaysian Affairs.

His central scholarly interest lies in understanding historical situations in which the evidence is sparse, varied and difficult to reconcile. This evidence would frequently include archaeological, ethnographic, literary, pictorial and environmental materials.

His main scholarly publications fall into four groups, dealing with:

Arnhem Land and the history of northern Australia generally, especially the trepang industry

South Sulawesi, Indonesia, especially the study of the indigenous manuscript tradition

the maritime exploration of the Australian continent

the history of northern Tasmania, Australia.
